V.J. Christo
Christo American born June 13, 1935 of a Bulgarian industrialist family. He is married to Jeanne-Claude. Christo is one of the most popular artists in the world, and one whose popularity is easiest to bear. As striking and monumental as his works may be, they do not threaten our already crowded environment. They are really more in the nature of acts than works, for everything Christo has done over the years still exists in memory alone. Every print and object has a function in Christo’s work, each participates in the triad of imagination, realization and memory. Every sketch presses toward execution. Like the preliminary sketches and collages, the prints serve as the source of funds Christo needs to carry out the large projects. He has never accepted either public funding or private sponsorship. Freedom is his prime concern, and it’s guaranteed by his sketches, collages, and editions.
