The White House Gallery began its business life as an art and framing dealership trading under the name, Creative Frames Group. Under the curatorship of investment art dealer and managing partner, Clive Sergay, the company developed in size, scope and recognition to become a widely respected art consultancy that provided advisory and sourcing services to a discerning base of national and multinational corporations and private individuals.
Private collector and contemporary art aficionado, Alan Uria joined Clive in 2001, and utilised his knowledge and expertise to acquire a sought after collection of contemporary lithographs, etchings and other works on paper. From inception until the present day, an in-house framing operation, Alive Art, provides clients with customised, specialised framing services which are aimed at enhancing and preserving the value of art works. When the idea for The White House Gallery was first conceived we had a bigger picture in mind. More than catering to the discerning tastes of serious collectors of contemporary local and international art, we wanted to create an ambience in which first time buyers with no real knowledge of art would feel equally at home.
In recognizing that building an art collection is a journey rather than a destination, we set about acquiring a wide ranging portfolio that featured renowned contemporary masters such as Chagall, Marini, Miro, Moore, Portway, Pasmore, Stella, Picasso, Dine, and Hockney - to name a few. We then included the more affordable works of up and coming artists in Britain and France, along with globally acclaimed South African artists such as Sam Nhlengethwa and Pieter van der Westhuizen and added the works of potters, ceramicists and sculptors of the caliber of Esias Bosch, Laurence Chait and Anton Smit. At the same time we also acquired a selection of inexpensive, quality art and posters for home décor enthusiasts.
Two years down the line from our first exhibition in July 2004, our client base has expanded considerably. Today, in the relaxed informal environment we have successfully created; recent art enthusiasts often rub shoulders with established collectors from both the corporate and private sectors and exchange insights on our constantly changing works of art.
The name White House Gallery embodies the consultancy's evolutionary progress from its original formal gallery to the more relaxed ambience of its recently constructed premises in Oaklands, Johannesburg. The present gallery with its tranquil garden setting is a masterpiece of light and space, designed to provide serious investors, new collectors and browsers with an unrivalled visual arts experience. |
